The Reed Flute Cave is situated in a completely concealed spot on Guangming Hill, 3.2 miles northwest of the town, Reed Flute Cave is Guilin's largest and most impressive cave. Its name is explained by the fact that reeds for making flutes and pipes have been grown in this region since ancient times. This dripstone cave is 790 feet deep, and a visitor will walk for some 550 yards through a zigzagging sea of stalactites and stalagmites in dazzling colors. Although the cave is also known as a Palace of Natural Art, manmade strategies use artificial lighting to emphasize the coincidental similarity of the rock formations to birds, plants, and animals. It dates to some 400 years ago. Nowadays, it is a peaceful enclave in an otherwise very busy setting of small shops that even the Shanghai locals refer to as "Chinatown"--because the surrounding area is such a caricature of all that is Chinese in sales and merchandising.

Shanghai´s waterfront is known as The Bund.It is an elevated, landscaped, grand promenade. The busy waterways of Shanghai harbor are on the seaward side. Well, actually the water is a river that empties into the sea (and across the river is a space-age television tower and many large buildings). On the landward side, the street is lined with elegant commercial buildings, foreign consulates, banks, and other magnificent structures.

In the western part of Shanghai, a very modern and flourishing city, there is a venerable and famous Buddhist temple, Jade Buddha Temple. In 1882, an old temple was built to keep two Jade Buddha statues which had been brought from Burma by a monk named Huigen. The temple was destroyed during the revolution that overthrew the Qing Dynasty. Fortunately the jade Buddha statues were saved and a new temple was built on the present site in 1928.
